If theaters reopen amid greater uncertainty, the few distributors who have weathered the storm instead of jumping on the digital release bandwagon will be nervous to see how their titles are likely to fare. One of those titles that finally hits theaters this week is Will Gluck’s long-awaited sequel to his 2018 adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit.
With the success of her book about Peter (voiced by James Corden) and his friends, Bee (Rose Byrne), now married to Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson), is won over by ruthless publisher Nigel Basil-Jones (a funny twist from David) to Oyelowo ) to sign a new book deal. Dissatisfied with the new direction of the story, which depicts him as the villain, Peter leaves his friends behind and finds himself in some shady characters in the big city. Meanwhile, Bee and Thomas argue over Nigel’s clumsy approach to modernizing his wife’s story to sell more books.
Gluck and co-author Patrick Burleigh present a charmingly eccentric film full of surreal gags and slapstick moments. With a little self-reflective flair, you get the feeling that the duo managed to use the criticism of their first film and to react accordingly. The frequent references to Peter’s “annoying” personality are often funny and charmingly self-deprecating, even if they are a little exaggerated. In addition, as irritating as some may have found him earlier, Corden delivers a rather charming twist full of humor and chaotic candor.
Overall, Peter Rabbit 2 is hugely entertaining and significantly less cheesy than its predecessor. While Byrne and Gleeson are very personable, it’s the addition of Oyelowo as the scruffy Lothario that holds the whole thing together pretty well. I loved every second of it.

Perhaps the first major victim of pandemic movie theater closings, Peter Rabbit can now bounce again. Will Gluck’s successor to his mostly sympathetic original is pretty much the same formula as before, but pushes the meta quality even further. It’s fun and hectic with little chamomile tea and more from Domhnall Gleeson having a boxing match with David Oyelowo. It may not be for the Beatrix Potter purists and has a scatter shot quality, but remains pleasant for its brisk 93 minutes. Surprisingly, Gluck and Patrick Burleigh’s script has knowing fun with reactions to the first film. While critics denounce the original because it portrays Potter’s heroes as arrogant, mean and downright evil, Peter (“Terrible in foreign languages, great in cartoon violence”) goes on a journey from selfish to selfless like on a trip to Gloucester he encounters a Guy Ritchie-esque street gang led by gray-haired rabbit crimp Barnabas (Lennie James) and finds that he’s not a bad guy after all — it makes him more attractive overall. The plot of B takes on another pervasive blow in the first strip: the betrayal of the soft mood of the original stories in favor of something loud and intrusive. Here Bea (Rose Byrne) is being courted by the well-known publisher Nigel Basil-Jones (David Oyelowo, who takes a rare chance to play), who wants to bring the characters from her family to a beach or blow them up into space. If Bea worries that her book could turn into a “cheeky hip festival just for commercial reasons,” it sounds like a well-made line from a bloody Peter Rabbit review. Despite having some funny moments in Peter and Barnabas, they play a punch in the mouth in a trash can. an escape from a home kitchen — the first half lacks the narrative drive. It takes an enormously complicated robbery at a farmers market — crammed full of this hipster staple, “wildly mediocre folk music” — and a final rescue mission to sharpen the action and get the pulse racing. Peter’s relatives — sisters Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail (Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Aimee Horne) and cousin Benjamin Bunny (Colin Moody) — lack distinctive characters (another trait the film makes fun of), but they are fun To be casual characters: a judging pig, a fitness fox and a squirrel busking who in an eerie way knows the right song at the right time. It feels a little thin and generic compared to family dishes like The Mitchells Vs The Machines, but the Byrne-Gleeson combo wins and Gluck injects just enough slapstick and smarts to warrant a last breath about a sequel.
But when I saw Peter Rabbit 2 with a bunch of aging film critics, I wanted to be right there for this inflammatory film.
It was a pleasure to stand in front of the big screen again and lean back in my comfortable red seat. What was missing, however, was the chorus of infectious laughter that bounced off the walls.
Critics seldom laugh out loud, and they were all so far apart that I wouldn’t have heard a chuckle otherwise.
But the unrepentant goofy Peter Rabbit 2 certainly made me laugh with his mix of slapstick gags and adult in-jokes.
So it will surely be even more cracking for your little ones.
Domhnall Gleeson not only slips into the role of the clumsy farmer Mr McGregor, he drives himself into it with stormy enthusiasm. Imagine Some Mothers Do ‘Ave’ Em’s Frank Spencer after a box of energy drinks.
Whether it’s tumbling down a hill Looney Tunes style or being beaten up by a CGI beast, Gleeson always pulls something special out of his hat.
But it’s not just the visual gags that hit the mark in this sequel, but also the sharp writing.
It makes fun of farmers markets with their overpriced gifts, middle class folks with champagne in the fridge kept for a special occasion that will never come, and James Corden’s “annoying” voice. Kudos to the actor for being self-confident enough to recognize his excitable tones as Peter the rabbit, which “polarize”.
The film begins with Mr. McGregor marrying the painter Bea (Rose Byrne), whose head is then turned by a publisher (David Oyelowo) who wants to turn her Peter Rabbit picture books into something tasteless.
When I saw Peter’s picture on a giant billboard, I feared it would become one of those clichéd sequels where the main character learns about the dangers of fame. Fortunately, director and screenwriter Will Gluck is going in a completely different direction: The lovable rabbit meets a gang of thieving pets.
This leads to a glorious heist set piece and rapid-fire finale that hits you with one winning gag at a time. Such enthusiasm suggests a five-star review, but there were times when I would have wished I had poked vegetables up my ears like Peter so I wouldn’t have to hear Corden as much.
If it weren’t for that, Peter Rabbit would be 2 24-carrot gold.
